VICTORVILLE • The FBI is investigating the death of an inmate from Oregon who was found injured in his cell at the federal prison in Victorville.

Staff from the Victorville Federal Correctional Complex found Michael Paul Jones unresponsive with “injuries consistent with an assault” at 8:45 p.m. Monday, according to a statement Tuesday from the prison. Workers contained the area and tried to save Jones until rescuers arrived.

Paramedics transported Jones, 35, from the prison on Air Expressway to Victor Valley Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:47 p.m., according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner.

The prison was still on lockdown Tuesday morning, with some 1,300 high-security inmates confined to their cells while the FBI conducts an investigation.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
